Symington Family Estates gives scholarships to students from UTAD (University of Trás -os-Montes e Alto Douro)
Besides being the largest owner of vineyards in the Douro demarcated region, the Symington family is also known for its philanthropy. They have recently given two scholarships to students of the Agronomic Engineering and Oenology courses, from the University of Trás os Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD).
The scholarships include the full payment of the fees of the three-year degree and already have effect from the present school year. The grants were mainly intended for students who are natural from the Douro Demarcated Region but there are other specific criteria. One of the scholarships is for a student who, without this help, would not have the possibility to enrol in that institution. The other scholarship will be given to the student with the highest course average. In both cases, the university services are responsible for the selection process. Paul Symington, the company’s CEO, said that: “The future of Douro depends, largely, on the agricultural engineers and winemakers, and we want to help the young people of our region to have access to these excellent courses which are being taught at UTAD.”
